What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates provides each individual with an opportunity to re-balance their body by targeting and strengthening weakened areas with a variety of exercises undertaken to promote length, strength, flexibility and balance.

From attending our Pilates classes you can expect to improve your posture, flatten your stomach and tone every limb in your body!

If you’ve experienced matwork Pilates before, you’ll know what amazing core-strengthening work it is. However, by adding the spring resistance of the reformer as well as light weights you will experience a new level of total body workout.

The origins of the Pilates reformer date back to the original Pilates studio in New York in the 1920’s and was designed by Joseph Pilates himself. The reformer uses springs, pulleys, bars & straps to perform hundreds of exercises in a variety of positions to target specific muscle groups.

Core

Pilates has a complete focus on building, strengthening and maintaining core stability and strength. All aspects of Pilates are based on breathing and core control.

Rehab

Pilates is a great way to start rehabiliation after an injury – be it, leg, arm, back or stomach. Whole body strength and an ever changing program enables true progress.

Exercise

Pilates is a whole body work out, increasing your strength and stamina; and, the beauty is, it is highly supervised so we can manage and adapt your program to your needs and goals.

Benefits

Key Benefits of Reformer Pilates

N

Everyday

Unlike some other physical activities, reformer Pilates can be done on a daily basis. It is gentle enough that it won’t tear muscles, yet challenging enough to keep you motivated. One important difference between matwork Pilates and reformer Pilates is that there are so many more movements and exercises on the reformer. With a variety of classes, you will feel your workouts targeting your body from all different angles.

N

Breathing

Your breathing is absolutely fundamental for your well being, and if you come to class, you’ll discover new ways to utilising your breath to maximize your energy. Building on the concept of core, back and postural strength, breathing links it all together and if you know how to breathe right, you can reduce stress levels and find focus easier in your daily life as well as during class.

N

Rehabilitate

The reformer is a great way to start exercising following a sports injury as it allows the client to exercise in a horizontal plane of movement and avoid any weight-bearing through the legs. If you have back injuries or muscle imbalances, it’s a great way to regain your strength.

The focus on postural work during class will help your spinal alignment and with continued practise will help decrease the risk of future injuries.

N

Flexibility

Not only will you strengthen and slim down – but you’ll also get more flexible from doing reformer Pilates. Being more flexible will reduce any stiffness and soreness as well as aid that quest for those long, lean muscles.

N

Tone & Strengthen

Reformer Pilates works muscles through a large range of motion that is ideal for building and toning muscles and increases stability through the joints.

If you’ve experienced matwork Pilates before, you’ll know what amazing core-strengthening work it is. However, by adding the spring resistance of the reformer as well as light weights you will experience a new level of total body workout.

N

Adaptable

Pilates is low impact and suitable for beginners to athletes, allowing each person to achieve an overall body workout with minimal risk of injury. The added benefit of doing the exercises on the reformer is that you can adjust the level of intensity to suit your own body, using the springs.

Our classes are small with only 10 reformers allowing the teacher to always give you individual attention and assistance with any problems you have.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

R

Reformer vs Mat Pilates

What's the difference?

Reformer Pilates uses springs to create added resistance to your exercises while mat Pilates only uses your own body weight and focuses on breathing and core control. Reformer Pilates also focuses on this, however, the use of a reformer employs the use of your arms, legs and other muscles.

Which one is better?

Which type of Pilates will depend on what you want to get out of your sessions. We believe reformer Pilates encases a full body workout and can be modified for you and your needs.

Classes

What do I need to wear?

Socks. It is mandatory that all classes be performed in socks for safety and hygiene purposes. Non-slip socks are available for purchase if you forget to bring some. We also recommend you bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

Please wear comfortable exercise attire to every class.

Do I need to arrive early?

We ask that you arrive 10 minutes early to your first session so that our instructor can give you an introduction to some basic moves. For your second and ongoing classes, please arrive on time.

How many classes do I need?

Joseph Pilates (the Pilates founder) quoted:

“In 10 sessions, you feel better; 20 sessions, you look better; 30 sessions, you have a completely new body.”

It depends on what you want to get out of your Pilates class, but ongoing classes are highly recommended.
